My first weekend in Zambia was quite much fun,
actually. Saturday I walked to the shopping centre which is about 4-5km away
and it takes about 1hour to walk there. The shopping centre is like a different
world compared to the rest of the Lusaka. It is very modern and westernised,
lots of white people there, too. After having a look around there, so many nice
shops (I need someone to come shopping with meJ).
Today I wasn’t too drowsy of the painkillers, so I was
socialising more with my flatmates. On the evening our flat spent time together
at the balcony of our muzungu (white person in slang) palace and then we went
to party together. So I have been in the bar and club in here Zambia, I had fun
to watch others get drunk and make fool of themselves, but I won’t be doing
that too often as it is bit boring when I can’t/want to drink and can’t dance
because of my knee.
On Sunday everyone else was sleeping late, so I was in
the water duty, as we get water only on certain time of the day, so we need to
fill in all the water tanks and water bottles when the water is on, otherwise
if we don’t do that we won’t have water to flush the toilet or water for
cooking and washing. That took me couple of hours to do, but it was kind of
fun. While I was on the water duty I had chance to unpack my stuff, organise
and clean my room. Shower wasn’t actually too bad this morning, as you get
sweaty during the night so cold shower will cool you down very nicely.
As here is nothing to do, so I decided to go to one of
the markets that they have around here. So I walked there which was about 5-6km
away from where we live, so it took about 1 hour to walk there. The market is
at the other shopping centre on every Sunday, and there is few other markets
around the town. My knee is little bit
better, but when it is fully extended I can’t but much weight on it, so I am
still limping but not too badly. (Polvi on
They sell the local arts, crafts, souvenirs and fabric
and everything made out of it. It was quite nice to have a look around it.
There is very nice stuff, so I bought a shoulder bag made out of local fabric.
Now I know where and what I am going to buy for xmas presents.
I am not using my cast anymore, the bone will heal or not, but I don’t care. During the night I hit myself with the cast on my nose that hard my nose started to bleed. Having a cast in +30-35 temperature is not fun, my hand swells very much and then the cast will start to hurt if I try to move my fingers. I am going to avoid using my right hand and I will tape it up and I will use the cast when I am home, but at work in the hospital I can’t use it, won’t be very hygienic. I am also tired of explaining what have happened and I was without cast for 3 weeks before I got the cast, so I will try not to use it too much.
